24 Hour Mod Society; In Memory of Gillian Haigh

From NICK WAIN:

A lot of my 80s photos that you've put on your site were from the time I lived in Leeds and was a member of the Leeds "24th Hour" Mod Society. Sadly, Gillian Haigh, one of the members of the “24th Hour”, died last year. Most of the old "24th Hour" members are getting together to put on a do in her honour (see attached poster and www.myspace.com/twentyfourthhour ).

All proceeds are going to Cancer Research. We’ll be playing some of the best Soul, R’n’B, Jazz and Ska from that era, and there should be a good mix of people mods, ex-mods, soulies, and normals! There’ll certainly be a few people there that I haven’t seen for about 20 years or so, so I’m really looking forward to it. It’s not just for people who knew Gill; all are welcome, so please feel free to pass this on to anybody who might be interested.

The venue is Coco, Heatons Court, Travelyan Square, Leeds, LS1 4LJ on Sat 2nd Feb, 2008 from 8Pm to 2AM

ITALIAN JOB MOD RALLY 2008

"THE ITALIAN JOB" International Mod Rally - 20/21/22/23 March 2008

Here we are again, presenting the Easter Rimini International Mod Rally, this year at hits 24th edition.

As usual we’ve done our best to guarantee the right dose of quality music, Smart people and friendly atmosphere (without mentioning Italian food and wine of course)

The only change to the program, compared to previous years, will be the Sunday afternoon gig, that this year will be held at Life Disco, on the ground floor, where you will have the chance to see live a brilliant R’n’B/Jazz quintet, by the name of Midnite Special. Therefore also the scooter competition will take place outside Life and will be followed by a free buffet.

For the rest the program is the same one that, in previous years, gave to hundreds of people four days of good music, smart attitude and a long weekend of pure modernist fun. Make sure you don’t miss it.

Midnite Special:
Mat "Side-Whisker" (Guitar), Alessandro "Woodman"(bass), along with a saxofonist, had been playing a few local jazz caf's doing Jack McDuff and John Lee Hooker instrumentals. After listening to one of their recordings Claudio 'Dna Groove' De Rossi  offered his vocal and harp (non) services to get something cookin'. After local jazz and beat dj Paul Beat "The Doctor"  was contacted for his organ and piano abilities, the sax was dropped. Soon afterwards young Manuel   "Bubu Jr." was sat on drums during spring 2007. Organ player was recently replaced by “Giulio Jazz” to complete the quintet.

Blues masters like Joe Hill Lewis, Sonny Boy Wiiliamson, Professor Longhair, Big Moose Jackson, Ray Charles are all revisited, jazzed up, and seated first class on the Midnite Special train straight to Rimini for sharp dressers, slick talkers and hip movers. Be there or be square!

Dean Parrish and Russ Winstanley will be appearing at the City Club Peterborough  on the Friday 24th August with Dave Raistrick and  more star studded jocks, Dean is over to appear at the Wigan shopping centre event which will take place on the site of the original Wigan Casino Club  , Stef had a chat to Russ and they both kindly agreed to appear in Peterborough at mates rates in a bid to raise money for the NSPCC, Dean is already Honuory President of the East Anglian Soul Club fund raising team and he generously  did a voice over advert promoting the City Club events which is played on Coops radios show.

Looks like it will be a packer as people are still raving about Deans performance at the Peterborough College, tickets for this one are £10 or you can treat yourself to the VIP package, for £30 you can have Champagne in the VIP lounge, then autographed photos with Dean, which are printed up on the day, you will be also treated to the best pizzas in town , now that’s according to Mr. Dean Parrish a guy that hangs around with The Soprano bunch and Tina’s home made Pasta, numbers are limited for the VIP section so anyone who takes advantage of it can have a good chinwag with Dean and Russ.

The EASC boys are also then talking about taking a coach down to Wigan from Peterborough ,  and Stefs gonna ask Dean if he will lead the sing song on the bus, can just imagine him singing “ If you’re Happy and you know it clap your hands”!!

More details available on www.eastangliansoulclub.org or to book ticket on paypal [email protected], it’s a great charity so make sure you get down there baggies and all.

Lots of other great jocks appearing in the year, kicking off on the 27th with Soul Sam and Arthur Fenn, and Sister Dawn and in the following months we have John Vincent , Carl Fortnum, Ian Gee, Steve Woomble , Andy Bellwood and Kev Roberts, all appearing at the club, all these guys have kindly agreed to appear at “mates rates” petrol money or free thank you boys and girls.
